BUSINESSES in Darlington are failing to back a charity ball being held in aid of a women's refuge, according to organisers.
Dee Wastnedge, from Darlington Domestic Violence Forum, asked 100 companies in the town to donate raffle prizes for the black-tie event at Headlam Hall, Gainford, on November 5.
She said yesterday that only five firms had donated prizes.
"Some firms have been very generous but the majority have just said no. I understand that all these firms get a lot of requests for help. I'm realistic, but I'm also bitterly disappointed because of the lack of response."
"Domestic violence affects one woman in four and I'd like to think we could get something more."
The ball has been organised to raise cash for the Family Help refuge in Darlington.
Ms Wastnedge said even if companies just wanted to give a bottle of wine or spirits it would help her to fill hampers for the raffle.
