THERE were 127 entries in the Melmerby and Middleton Quernhow Village Hall committee's family run held on May 30 and 296 runners in the 20th Melmerby 10K road race, part of the Black Sheep Brewery series.
Weather conditions may have been ideal for the spectators, but was a little too warm for the competitors. Of those asked, all but one admitted it was too warm. "The odd one out remarked: "No, it was ideal, I've just come back from America."
Coun Chris Brown, the Baldersby farmer, was running in the event following his recent desert marathon attempt.
First home in the 2-mile family run was Philip Fitzpatrick of Richmond and Zetland Harriers in a good time of 12.46min and the first female runner was Caitlin Pearson of New Marske Harriers in 16.35.
The first man across the finishing line in the 10K road race was Alasdair Tatham of the Quakers Running Club in 33.14, followed 18 seconds later by Martin Grainger of Darlington.
The first lady home was Helen Sly of the Horsforth club in 38.30, followed by Alison Raw (Darlington) in 39.15, while the first local runner home was Stephen Parkinson (Ripon Runners) in 48.46.
The Darlington club won the men's team prize and Horsforth the ladies' prize.
Trophies and prizes were presented by Derrick Potter of the Potter Group, Melmerby. Refreshments were served throughout the event by the ladies of the village hall committee and others.
