Less than two months after the Government-backed Action Team for Jobs moved into the Wear Valley, it has helped six people find employment and is advising 40 others.

The project, which operates from Bishop Auckland Market Place, has advisors that run sessions in community centres and halls.

Equipped with laptop computers linked to JobCentre information points, they have information on vacancies and can advise on training and help with writing CVs and applications.

The aim of the scheme, which is one of ten in the North-East, is to help people find work by removing barriers such as lack of transport, benefit dependency, lack of equipment or suitable clothing, the need for training or childcare problems.

It was one of the priorities set out by regeneration agencies following the Wear Valley Jobs Summit a year ago.

One the first success stories is Kathryn McGrory, of High Street, Tow Law.

After seven years as a full-time mother and housewife, she wanted to return to work. The Action Team helped her with travel expenses until she received her first pay packet.

She said: "The Action team staff were so approachable and friendly - the help they offer stops anything holding you back.

"Being at home with the kids is nice, but going out to work gives me a new sense of purpose and enthusiasm and the money will help buy them things they want."
