DOG owners are being urged to clean up after their pets, or face stiff penalties.
Environmental officers are carrying out daily patrols as part of National Poop Scoop Week, which starts on Monday.
Last year, three teams of wardens handed out more than 100 fixed penalty notices, which carry £50 fines.
Easington District Council said dog fouling was a major problem and hopes its campaign will lead to residents doing more to prevent it.
Those falling foul of the law can face court prosecution and fines of up to £1,000.
Councillor George Patterson, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "Pet owners should remember to carry poop scoop bags with them and always clean up after their dog.
"Residents should be aware that dog fouling is illegal and our enforcement teams are on the look-out for offenders."
To report dog fouling, or to ask for a free poop scoop bag, contact the council's environmental services department, on 0191-527 5040.
