A WOMAN who has devoted 44 years of her life to the Guide Movement has been rewarded with an annual citizen of the year award.
At a presentation in Loftus Town Hall yesterday, mayor Gerry Dickinson presented the award to Maureen Smith, of Easington, near Loftus, who is currently assistant guider with the First Easington All Saints pack.
Guider Jane Dowey, who made the nomination, said: "Mrs Smith has given both her time and energy to both Brownie Guides and Young Leaders along the way, with a limitless supply of a good old-fashioned hands-on approach, together with practical advice and encouragement.
"Enjoyment and developing interests within the community and further afield has been the key to Mrs Smith's approach to the junior pack."
Small grant awards to local organisations were also distributed at the event, which was attended by residents of Loftus and surrounding villages.
Easington Brownies and Guides presented a short piece on developments in the Guide Movement over the last 90 years.
