A CHARITY is teaming up with an energy supplier to launch an award to recognise those who help wildlife and the local environment.
Durham Wildlife Trust is working with npower to celebrate the efforts of individuals, groups and organisations.
The Conservation Awards 2004 invites entries from across County Durham, Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside.
Durham Wildlife Trust chief executive Richard Wood: said: "When taken as a whole, improvements to small plots of land can have a significant impact on the biodiversity of species and wider conservation issues.
"I am delighted that Durham Wildlife Trust, in conjunction with npower, is able to recognise and reward local environmental improvement efforts through these awards."
Examples include the creation of a new habitat such as a wildlife garden or the improvement of an area where wildlife has been damaged or lost.
Gary Doig, npower's community relations officer, said: "We know that protecting the environment is important to the hundreds of staff and thousands of customers that we have in this area.
"One of npower's key aims is to inspire communities to get involved in improving the local environment, making it better for future generations.
"These awards acknowledge the benefits of bringing together conservation and the community."
The closing date for entries is August 20. Winners will be presented with awards by the Duchess of Northumberland at a ceremony on October 5. For details, call 0191-584 3112.
