TWO weeks after an elderly cyclist suffered fatal injuries in broad daylight on a busy road, police have revealed not a single witness has come forward to help their inquiry.
Police have now made an urgent appeal for witnesses to the accident in which 79-year-old widower Fred Booth died.
Mr Booth, from Byland Avenue, York, was cycling along the city's Huntington Road at 9.50am on Saturday, May 29, when he was in collision with a red Citroen Berlingo van at the junction with Wrays Avenue.
He was taken to York District Hospital, but died the next day.
The van driver, who was not hurt, has been interviewed but police have no independent witnesses to the accident.
Road policing group officer Iain Atkinson said: "Someone must have seen this. The accident happened on a busy route into York, only a mile from the city centre.
"We know there are normally plenty of people about, both drivers and pedestrians.
"We need witnesses for two reasons. First, to build up a complete picture of what happened for the coroner, and secondly, I believe we owe it to Mr Booth's family to tell them as much as possible about the accident.
"They do want to know how the old gentleman came to be hurt, and are giving their full support to this witness appeal."
Anyone who saw the accident, the red Berlingo van or Mr Booth before the accident is asked to call the witness line on (01904) 669884.
