A town council has given an award to the first allotment holder to pay the annual rent for the year.
Brian Gibson, of Magdelene Terrace, was the first one of the 400 plot holders from the seven Ferryhill Town Council- run allotment sites to pay his rent.
Mr Gibson has rented an allotment on the Broom site for a number of years and has previously won the town council prize for the best kept allotment. His prize included a £10 gift voucher for Thinford Nurseries.
Judging is due to take place for this year's competition for the town's allotment sites at Paxton Street, Storehouse, East End, Broom, Chapel Row, Mainsforth Row and Feversham.
Each site will have an award for the best allotment and the most improved allotment. The best site overall will also win a prize.
Individual winners of each category will receive a year's free rent as well as a £15 gift voucher.
The competition is now in its sixth year.
