A WEARDALE primary school has been hailed as a shining example of a school that uses the arts in education.
St John's Chapel Primary School has been awarded the Artsmark Gold Award at its first attempt. The school was selected for award for spreading a diverse range of music, art and drama through the school and community.
Four years ago, teachers decided to enrich the curriculum for pupils with extra music and drama sessions and trips to theatres and galleries. Pupils now take part in local dance festivals, hold after-school clubs for hobbies such as knitting for pupils and parents, and work with professional artists and story tellers. Arts co-ordinator Joanne Ridley said: "We are so proud to get this award, especially after applying for the first time. We have worked hard to use the arts, not only in school and but we also involve the community because we know how enriching it is for children.
"Pupils, staff, governors and parents have worked hard to achieve this and for a small close community it is great."
