THE next stage in an MP's attempt to ban large shops opening on Christmas Day takes place later this week.
Shopworkers are being urged to lobby their parliamentary representatives to support a Private Member's Bill sponsored by Durham North MP Kevan Jones.
The Christmas Day (Trading) Bill, backed by shopworkers' union Usdaw, seeks to ban stores bigger than 280-sq metres from opening on Christmas Day.
At present, big stores are only prevented from opening if December 25 falls on a Sunday.
Usdaw has encouraged shopworkers and supporters to write to their MPs requesting they attend the Commons on Friday and vote in favour of the Bill at its third reading.
If it wins approval, it will go to the House of Lords for further discussion, which could enable it to become law in time for Christmas.
Usdaw general secretary John Hannett said: "Unless we act now, widespread trading on Christmas Day is a real possibility and our members are convinced they would be forced to work.
"We need to lock the stable door before the horse bolts."
Mr Jones received support from Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt in the run-up to last Christmas when she urged big store groups to observe the spirit of Christmas and opt against opening on December 25.
Details about the Bill and the Usdaw campaign is available on the union's website at www.usdaw.org.uk.
