DEFENCE group Smiths has bought a US company that makes equipment to identify chemicals used in weapons of mass destruction.

Smiths said it had completed the acquisition of SensIR Technologies for £41.5m.

It said the deal would help it build its business serving the security detection market.

SensIR Technologies makes infra-red-based analysers that can identify gaseous chemicals and biological agents.

The company was formed in 1995 and has 110 employees, the majority in the US.
