FOUR men were remanded in custody yesterday after jointly being charged with attempted robbery and a firearm offence.
Appearing in Peterlee Magistrates' Court were Ian Hart, 30, of Goodyear Crescent, in Sherburn Road Estate, Durham, Russell Frederick Snowdon, 28, of Holly Park, Ushaw Moor, George Henry Appleby, 48, of 154A Gilesgate, Durham and Paul Sherrington, 37, of Millbrook, Gateshead.
The court heard that the charges of attempted robbery and possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent, had arisen out of a failed Post Office raid on June 10 in Shotton Colliery, in east Durham, when staff were threatened with a hammer and a gun.
Applications for bail were made on behalf of each of the men but were rejected by the magistrates who remanded the four in custody.
Their next court appearance will be at Durham Crown Court on Friday.
