A POPULAR former mayor who was always willing to help people has died at the age of 72.
Clarence Watson worked for local councils in Teesdale for 31 years, ending up as a general foreman.
He was a member of Barnard Castle Town Council for 11 years and served two terms as mayor, in 1993 and 1998.
In between ceremonial duties he tackled odd jobs for neighbours and set out stalls to help local organisations.
His widow, Nancy, said yesterday: "He was never happier than when he was helping people."
Mr Watson, known as Clarry, was a drummer for several dance bands in his younger days.
He drove a snowplough during some of the most severe winters and was always determined to try to clear the roads in Upper Teesdale.
Mr Watson died at his home, in Marwood Drive, Barnard Castle. He leaves his wife, a son Michael, daughter Alison and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at Barnard Castle Parish Church at 11.30am. Donations in lieu off flowers can be sent to Cancer Research UK.
