A POLICE underwater search team was brought in at the weekend after a man was arrested in the River Ouse.
Police were called at 7.40pm on Friday when a member of the public reported seeing a man in the river near Clifton Bridge, in York.
The 33-year-old was arrested for his own safety under the Mental Health Act.
Soon after his arrest, an area of the riverbank was cordoned off and underwater teams began a search of the river.
A witness said the man claimed to have found two bodies in a bag in the river.
Inspector Mark Rhodes, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "A man was arrested under the Mental Health Act provisions for his own safety.
"As a result of what he was saying, we were duty bound to make a search. We completed the search but nothing has been found."
