A STUDENT was expecting to sleep well last night after completing a supreme test of endurance.
Rower Giles Tibbitts paid the price for suggesting fellow members of St Chad's Boat Club should stage an end-of- term challenge to raise funds for the Sir Steve Redgrave Charitable Trust.
Only days after competing in events at Durham Regatta, boat club members took part in a 24-hour sponsored static row.
They mounted two ergo, or static, rowing machines side-by-side in an outdoor setting near Durham Cathedral, opposite the college. But as former captain and the mastermind behind the event, 20-year-old Mr Tibbitts felt duty bound to play a main role in the rowing.
He took part for at least half-an-hour for each of the 24 hours, which meant he rowed for a total of 12 hours, without any sleep.
The bio-chemistry student is hoping that the event will have raised about £1,500 for the charity.
