ONE of the region's most recognisable landmarks has been recreated out of Meccano for an exhibition this weekend.
A version of Antony Gormley's Angel of the North, with a 52-inch wingspan, has been built out of the children's construction kit for a display at the Beamish Museum, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham.
The History of Meccano Exhibition, by the North East Meccano Society, features working models built with sets dating back to the early 1900s.
On Saturday, the museum is also holding guided tours around its Georgian terraced garden, at Pockerley Manor, which has flowers, fruit and vegetables that were common in the early 1800s.
On Sunday, youngsters gather for the annual school sports day, when reigning champions West Pelton Primary, near Chester-le-Street, take on Beamish and East Stanley Primary Schools.
The children, dressed in period costume, will compete in traditional races such as the booler relay, egg and spoon, three-legged race and the 40-yard dash.
The History of Meccano exhibition runs on Saturday and Sunday. The Georgian garden guided tours take place on Saturday, and the school sports day is on Sunday.
