TRANSCO staff have won a gold award after raising tens of thousands of pounds for charities.
The UK's learning disability charity Mencap presented the award to gas pipeline workers for topping the £50,000 fundraising mark.
The cash comes from Transco's Safety Charity Challenge scheme, where staff are pledged money for good causes in return for staying safe at work.
This year, staff in Transco's North of England network amassed £52,354 after spotting almost 5,000 potential hazards and slashing work-related accidents by 42 per cent.
Half goes to Mencap and the rest will be divided between 13 other good causes nominated by local staff.
Charities who will receive nearly £2,000 include the North-East Stroke Association, Sunderland, Grace House Hospice, Sunderland, Botton Village, Whitby, Tynemouth Blind Welfare Society, North Shields, Butterwick Hospice, Stockton, and Dementia Care Partnership, Newcastle.
