YOUNG athletes from across the region are gearing up for a major competition that will take place in the North-East.
The 74th English Schools' Athletics Association National Championships takes place at Gateshead International Stadium next month.
The County Durham heats took place at the Riverside Stadium in Chester-le-Street, where 14-year-old Phillip Collins, from Darlington, staked his claim for glory by winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.86m.
He beat his nearest rival by more than 25cm and eased over the national qualifying standard by 14cm.
Tomorrow, the County Durham team will get the chance to see some of their competitors in action, when they take on Northumberland in an inter-counties match at the Clareville Stadium, in Middlesbrough.
The ESAA National Championships take place in Gateshead on Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10.
