A BID to provide a market town with a safe route for cyclists has reached a milestone.
The Guisborough Cycle Group is to celebrate its second birthday with the resurfacing of the town's disused rail line between its junction with The Avenue to Aldenham Road.
The group's plan is for cyclists to be able to travel in safety along the disused rail line from Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, through Guisborough and into east Cleveland; eventually linking up with the National Cycle Network.
Additional funding will see the resurfacing of the Enfield Chase to Butt Lane section of the disused line later in the year.
Group treasurer Ian Henry said: "This latest phase is a vast improvement on the muddy surface that was there previously. The new surface is useable in all weathers and there is plenty of space for everyone. I am looking forward to the completion of the next phase."
Money for the latest project came from the Guisborough Market Town Initiative. Stan Frank, its chairman, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to fund this project.
"We want to make Guisborough a better place for walkers and cyclists."
The initiative has also funded cycle stands installed at 11 sites around Guisborough, including Westgate and Chaloner Street.
