OPERA star Suzannah Clarke will be appearing at a classical music event next month.

The Middlesbrough-born soprano will be performing at the Picnic in the Park, at Hurworth Grange, Croft Road, Hurworth, near Darlington, on Saturday, July 3, at 7pm.

The event has been a big success in recent years, but was scaled down last year in a row about lack of support from council chiefs.

This year, organisers are expecting large numbers to attend the picnic, which will also include performances from Hurworth Concert Band, the Richmondshire Orchestra and the Creative Interests Children's scheme, plus a fireworks display.

Eric Laycock, manager of Hurworth Grange, said: "Last year was more low-key but it was still very enjoyable. This year, we are really lifting the profile again and are delighted to have an international star like Suzannah taking part."

* Hurworth Gala takes places on Sunday at Hurworth Grange, from 1pm to 4.30pm. The event features live music, fairground rides, stalls and games. Admission is £1 and 50p concessions.
