Durham Amateur Rowing Club attended Durham Regatta this weekend with racing along the racecourse section of the river.
The event was run over two days, with over 400 races over the weekend, attracting clubs from all over the North of England and as far South as Bristol to take part in what was a fantastic event with large crowds on the bank side and weather to suit the occasion.
Durham ARC had a large contingent entered into the event, achieving 28 wins over the weekend.
The wins were spread across the age range of the club, from the youngest winners, the girl's J 13 quad (M. Pickering, L. Lax, A. Scurfield, P. Jones, Cox H. Lax), to a more senior member winning the Men's Vet F single (J. Applegarth), showing a strength across the whole club.
The junior section again performed particularly well, with a win for the Men's J15 Double (A Turner and R Hartley) on Sunday being one of the highlights.
The outstanding individual performances of the weekend where Helen Preston, Harry Scarr and Fiona and Emma Steel. Helen won the J14 single on both days, the J14 double with Vicky Elder and the J14 quad (V. Elder, J. Reay, H. Preston, F. Steel, Cox C. Howie). Harry won the J18 single and the Elite Pairs on both days, Fiona won the J15 single on Saturday, Emma won the J18 on both days and the two sisters joined forces to win the J18 double on Saturday and the S3 double on Sunday.
Not to be outdone by the juniors, John Appleby won three events over the weekend, stroking the Vet E VIII, Vet C IV and his Vet D single to victory.
Further Saturday winners over the weekend were: W Vet 1X (H. Stainforth), MJ141X (D. Howie), M Vet B 1X (R. Court), MS31X (P. Walton) and the W E 2X (R. Terry, H. Blevins).
Further Sunday winners were: WJ161X (N. Bruce), J2X (P. Walton, D. Howie), M Vet IV (Hole) and the Women's S2 Eight (Nelson).
On Sunday, the National Veteran Championships were held at Nottingham. Carolyn Edwards won the Veteran D category. Carolyn started rowing less than three years ago, so this is a magnificent achievement in such a short time. Hazel Stainforth and Mickey Stevens raced a mixed double and finished in an excellent second place.
