AN inventor has pioneered a building aid that may revolutionise the construction industry.
Kevin Hewson has designed a labour-saving device that will appeal to professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike.
His invention is a plastic guide, called a Brikmat, that lies between layers of bricks, minimising the need for time-consuming level checking and which guarantees a uniform level finish.
Left to set in the mortar, the plastic strips have also been proven to add strength to the completed wall.
The Brikmat entered production three weeks ago at a small factory unit in Willington, County Durham.
Mr Hewson's faith in his design prompted him to sell his glazing and conservatory business, in Gateshead.
He has applied for approval from the New House Building Council and has registered a world-wide patent for the product, which has received endorsement from the British Board of Agriment and insurers Zurich Insurance.
He said: "For the first time, contractors will be able to guarantee a 10mm mortar bed, and therefore can be sure they will meet design and quality specifications."
