A charity has reaped the rewards of a crime prevention boss's bright idea to cut car crime.
Sergeant Glynn Bass had 1,000 windscreen sunshields printed with the words "On the advice of the Safer Middlesbrough Partnership property removed" in a bid to keep car criminals at bay.
Sgt Bass said: "This is the first in the UK. No other police force or crime prevention office has done it. We had some money in our budget to cover the cost and, as a result, we produced 1,000 of these screens. It advertises the partnership and helps motorists keep the sun and criminals at bay."
The screens were free, but motorists were asked to give a £1 donation for a local charity that deals with domestic violence.
As a result, Chief Superintendent Mark Braithwaite, district commander of Middlesbrough, handed over a cheque for £1,039 to Pat Gallagher from the charity, My Sister's Place
