SUNDERLAND'S latest acquisition Dean Whitehead has revealed that his decision to move to the Stadium of Light was the easiest of his career.
The 22-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats, and the Abingdon-born midfielder had no hesitation in making the move from his local club Oxford to Wearside.
After putting pen to paper Whitehead said: "As soon as I heard that Sunderland were interested in me, my mind was set on coming here. There was not a decision to make.
"I was told that Sunderland wanted me towards the end of last week and that was it. To come to a big club like this, a club which should be in the Premiership, is a dream come true."
Whitehead is Mick McCarthy's third signing of the summer following Manchester City striker Stephen Elliott and Portsmouth midfielder Carl Robinson, both of whom have agreed permanent deals.
Oxford manager Graham Rix was desperate to keep the fans' player of the year who can play wide right or in central midfield, but when Sunderland registered their interest those hopes ended.
Whitehead said: "I'm really excited about next season. Working with such a good manager and such good players and playing at such a big stadium is more than I could have hoped for.
"Mick McCarthy didn't have to do much to convince me to sign. I am aware that this is a huge step up for me and it will be a big challenge.
"But I have a lot of faith in my ability and I know I am capable of playing in this division."
McCarthy is also keen on Mansfield midfielder Liam Lawrence as he looks to rebuild his squad following last season's crushing defeat in the play-offs.
With Jason McAteer and Paul Thirlwell among those heading out of the Stadium Of Light McCarthy is keen to strengthen in midfield to maintain competition for places.
Whitehead is well aware he will have to force his way into McCarthy's first-team plans with the likes of Jeff Whitley, Robinson, John Oster, Sean Thornton, and Matt Piper currently standing in his way.
"I have seen Sunderland play and I know that there are a lot of good players and a lot of international players at the club," said Whitehead.
"There are some very good midfielders here already but I will be working very hard and, although I know it will be difficult, hopefully I will be able to get a place in the side.
"I'm relishing the chance to get started and I cannot wait until July 6 for the start of pre-season training."
Whitehead made more than 100 appearances for Oxford since breaking into the side as a teenager.
As Whitehead is under 24 and has come through the ranks with the U's, Sunderland will have to pay compensation to Oxford.
