TWO libraries yesterday launched schemes to attract young readers.

The first Bookstart project opened at Brandon Library, Durham, where in partnership with the SureStart organisation, young readers were invited to sample some of the treats in store over coming weeks.

Early Years Practitioner Linda Keene started the new scheme by reading a number of stories and rhymes to library users aged five and under.

Ms Keene also played a number of musical instruments for the youngsters.

Rosalind Huntley, a senior library assistant at the branch, said: "After this launch, we are going to hold Tiny Tots sessions every Tuesday.''

The sessions, which will begin on Tuesday, July 6, will be held between 2.30 and 3pm.

They will include activities such as story and rhyme reading and simple craft making.

A similar scheme has been launched at Esh Winning Library, also in County Durham, as part of staff's efforts to increase the number of young people using it.

Anyone interested in taking their children to the events can find out more from the libraries.
