THE mystery of why an elderly woman walked into a rough sea and drowned remained unsolved after an inquest.

North Yorkshire East Coroner Michael Oakley, recording an open verdict at the Scarborough hearing, said there was no evidence to suggest that 76-year-old widow Joyce Lydon, of Holbeck Mews, Filey Road, in the town, committed suicide.

Arthur Mouser, of Friars Ways, Scarborough, said he was walking on the South Bay beach near The Spa last April when he saw Mrs Lydon and smiled at her.

He saw her look out to sea then spotted her paddling.

Mrs Lydon continued to walk into the sea and was suddenly hit by a large wave, he said. He immediately raised the alarm.

Her son, Ian Lydon, said his mother was independent, fit and still went rambling, swimming and played bowls.

He said she had no problems, financial or otherwise.

Mr Lydon said: "It was a complete shock that she walked into the sea."

Medical evidence was given that Mrs Lydon drowned.
