WORK has started on a £485,000 all-weather pitch to boost sports facilities in a town.
The pitch, on land between Hambleton Leisure Centre and the Allertonshire School, in Northallerton, will be big enough to accomodate six games of tennis or two games of five-a-side football or hockey at a time.
It will open in October and alongside it will be a skatepark to be operated by the Northallerton Wheelers.
The chairman of Hambleton District Council, Councillor June Imeson, and her North Yorkshire County Council counterpart, Councillor John Dennis, were at the site yesterday to see the work begin.
They got their hockey sticks out to mark the last game to be played on grass on the site.
Councillor Imeson said: "This new facility will provide great opportunities for young people in Northallerton and the surrounding district.
"It will also provide a new venue for young people to play sport out of school - in the evening, weekends and holidays."
Councillor Dennis said: "I look forward to coming back when the complex is open and seeing young people enjoying themselves."
