A DOG which is coming to terms with the loss of its owner is in need of a home for a second time.
Jack was only six weeks old when the National Animal Sanctuary Support League recovered a litter of five puppies.
All were found homes, following an appeal in The Northern Echo, and Jack went to live with a man in Darlington.
But during a recent walk the man collapsed and died of a heart attack.
The dog was found standing protectively over his owner and barking.
Now Jack is back in the care of the league, which needs to find him another home.
The three-and-a-half-year-old collie-spaniel cross is described as an exceptional dog.
Pauline Wilson, from the league, said: "He is absolutely lovely, the whole litter were, but he has had a bit of a rough time because he really missed his owner.
"He seems to be settling down and getting back to his normal self, but he was quite heartbroken, grieving almost, because they were very close."
Mrs Wilson said Jack would suit someone who enjoys walking and would be an asset to any family.
She said: "He is very good with other dogs and curious about cats, but gets on with them.
"People might say it sounds over the top, but he is exceptional and very, very intelligent."
