AN appeal has been issued for more lifeguards to come forward to help patrol beaches during the summer months.
Earlier this year, Hartlepool Borough Council agreed to re-instate lifeguards in the town after withdrawing the service in 2001 due to financial pressures.
However, following the death of Jordan Moon who was swept out to sea last August, 5,000 residents petitioned the authority seeking the re-introduction of the service.
The council is looking to take on a total of nine lifeguard and four lifeguard supervisors to cover beaches at Seaton Carew, and Block Sands and Fish Sands, on the Headland, between July 17 and August 31.
Lifeguards will be paid £273 for a 40-hour week, but people who can only work for some of the week are still being encouraged to apply.
James Gilchrist, from the council, said: "The response to the recruitment campaign has been good and we have offered jobs to 13 candidates, subject to them achieving the necessary standards during training.
"However, we still could do with more applicants, even if they can only provide cover on a part-time basis.
"We are particularly looking for people who are strong swimmers, observant, good communicators and can be relied on in an emergency."
The authority is also investing about £100,000 in rescue equipment, including an all-terrain vehicle, a jet ski and VHF radios linked to the Coastguard.
