Billingham: Eighteen competitors from Billingham travelled to Scarborough to compete in the A & B graded Gala at the weekend.
Medals being awarded for the first six places in each grade. There was success all round with 16 medals in the A grade and 19 in the B grade being accomplished. A phenomenal 68 personal bests achieved out of 71 swims. All those competing swam superbly. There were a few nail biting finishes which had the spectators up in their seats.
Ten-year-old Stephanie Blakeburn competing in the A grade was victorious in the 50m back and free, coming 2nd in the 100m IM and 4th in the 50m fly, her other swim being 50m breast. Also 10 years, Benjamin Raper found success in the B grade coming 1st in the 50m back, 3rd in the 50m breast and swam the 100m IM He also picked up a speeding ticket in the 50m free.
Three 11-year-olds were, Emma Shepherd swimming in the A grade 50m free, and in the B grade came 3rd in the 50m breast, 4th in the 100m IM and swam 50m fly and 50 back. Harriet Goodman came 4th in the 50m free in the A grade and in the B grade, 3rd in the 50m back, 4th in the 100m IM and swam 50m fly. Gareth Allen in the A grade, swam 50m free, fly, back and 100m IM.
In the 12-year-old category Katherine Usher competing in the B grade swam 100m back, IM and free in which she picked up speeding tickets for all three swims. Anthony Brown in the A grade collected 3rd in the 100m back and IM and swam 100m free, in the B grade he came 1st in the 100m breast and swam 100m fly. Stephanie Hughes swam in the B grade in the 100m back, IM and free.
Four 13-year-olds taking part were Bradley Dixon in the A grade coming 1st in the 100m fly with a tremendous swim, 2nd in both the 100m IM and back and in the B grade 3rd in the 100m breast. The following three all competed in the B grade. Jesssica Trewin picked up a speeding ticket in the 100m free, came 3rd in the 100m fly, 4th in the 100m breast and 5th in the 100m I.M, She also swam 100m back. Charlotte Brown came 1st in the 100m free, 6th in the 100m breast and swam 100m I.M. Abbie Marsden swam 100m breast, IM., back and free.
Five 14-year-olds were; Joanne Longster competing in the A grade was victorious in the 100m free, back and fly. The following competed in the B grade. Lisa Sheehan picked up a speeding ticket in the 100m free, 4th in both the 100m back and I.M. and swam 100m breast. Pippa Shepherd was 2nd in the 100m back, 3rd in the 100m free, 5th in the 100m I.M. and swam 100m fly and breast. Stephanie Hurron swam the 100m free, back and I.M. and Jamie Keenan the 100m free and back.
Fifteen-year-old Jane Usher was 5th in the 100m IM in the A grade, and in the B grade 2nd in the 100m breast, 3rd in the 100m back and 4th in the 100m free.
Durham City ASC: The club had four swimmers compete at the 1st NEC (North-East Counties) Gala last weekend with some very good personal best swims taking place.
