CHARITY bosses got the chance to help shape a Government Bill at a conference with Darlington MP Alan Milburn yesterday.
The event in Darlington saw about 60 representatives from charities and community organisations give their views on the draft Charities Bill.
Mr Milburn is chairing a cross party pre-legislative scrutiny committee that has a key role in influencing the Charities Bill.
He decided to organise the conference in Darlington yesterday to give local charity workers the chance to have their say.
He said: "The committee needs to find out if the Bill will work in practice, so I felt it was important to hear from charities in Darlington.
"Charities law dates back to 1601, so this really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get it right. It is important I hear from the horse's mouth on this so we create laws that are helpful and do not hinder charities.
"We want to help charities by encouraging more people to volunteer and get more people to give money."
