A £3m assembly hall was opened at a Darlington school by the town's MP yesterday.
Alan Milburn opened Carmel RC Technollogy College's assembly hall and technology block, built by Miller Construction.
The hall will be known as the John Caden Hall, after the 82-year-old chairman of governors, who retires this year.
It is in recognition of the life-long commitment Father Caden has given to public services and, in particular, education.
The former hall is being converted into a library and learning centre. Music, art, information communication technology and PE have also benefited from the programme.
Mr Milburn said: "The completion of such high standard facilities will allow students and teachers to benefit from an enhanced learning environment, both now and in the future."
Headteacher James O'Neill said: "The new buildings are a great asset to the college and we are delighted with the finished results.
"The addition of a bespoke technology block greatly enhances our ability to offer high quality provision in this important area of the college curriculum, as well as confirming our reputation as a leading specialist technology college."
Tom de la Motte, regional director of Miller Construction, said: "The new and refurbished buildings will provide modern, first-class facilities to complement a 21st Century education."
