A DELEGATION from the Asia Pacific area will visit the region tomorrow to forge new business links.

The Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK will lead the delegation of Malaysian development and tourism companies, with the help of UK Trade and Investment and regional development agency One NorthEast.

The visit is to develop trade links between Malaysia and the North-East and to highlight the innovative products and services the region can offer.

During the two-day programme, the delegation will visit the Bio Centre, at the University of Newcastle, the centre of excellence for Nano-technology, at Newcastle's Centre for Life, and the Genetics Knowledge Laboratories.

They will also visit Digital City, at the University of Teesside.

Geoff Young, UK Trade and Investment senior international trade advisor, said: "The universities are an important element of the visit as the UK is one of the preferred locations in the world to get degrees, with around 30,000 Malaysian students per year studying for UK degrees.

"The North-East and Malaysia have a lot to offer each other and I am confident this will be an important first step in establishing new trading opportunities between the two."
