Young tennis star Abi Curry of Stockton has become a National champion.

She won the 12 and under National Championship title in a tournament held at the weekend against the very best players from around the country.

Abi, 12, who trains at Tennis World in Middlesbrough, turned on the style to come up trumps at the competition held in Queenswood, Hatfield and proud mother Barbara was thrilled with her daughter.

She said: "This is simply fantastic.

"I am so proud to say that my daughter is a National Champion. She has worked so hard over the past few years and continued to listen to her coaches Nigel Garton and Mark Franklin whilst also competing around the country to get the invaluable experience needed to be the very best player she can be.

Since Tennis World opened in 1986 this is the first individual National title that has been won by one of their players and officials believe this confirms the club's status as one of the best in the country for talent development.
