A NORMANDY veteran met members of a North-East community group yesterday to talk about the recent D-Day celebrations in France.
Charles Turnbull, 87, of Carrville, served with Durham Light Infantry between 1940 and 1945.
He was evacuated from Dunkirk and was still fighting the Germans when the allies stormed Berlin.
Mr Turnbull joined other veterans in Normandy this year to remember the fallen heroes, who helped liberate Europe from the spectre of Nazism. Yesterday, he met Carrville Friendship Group to discuss the visit and honour the men who laid down their lives for their country.
A special service was held at Carrville Methodist Church in High Street.
Mr Turnbull said: "I wanted to be able to tell people about the celebrations in France for all the young lads who died out there.
"The talk was about the celebrations but it was also a service to remember the sacrifice they made.
