ONE of the world's most celebrated and controversial modern artists is exhibiting in the North-East - for the first time since graduating from the University of Sunderland a decade ago.

Richard Billingham won global recognition with the publication of candid and intimate photographs of his immediate family in 1996.

The fine arts graduate went on to exhibit at many of the world's leading galleries and was shortlisted for a Turner Prize in 2001.

Mr Billingham, 34, has three of his works on show at the University of Sunderland's Vardy Gallery, as part of the R+D (Research and Development) exhibition.

The exhibition allows former students to show how their work has developed since graduating. It is the first time he has exhibited in the North-East since his graduation.

Fellow exhibitors at the gallery include glass and ceramics graduate Charlotte Hughes, who has studied and exhibited in both the UK and the US.
