FIVE years after launching a £300,000 fund for a much-needed refuge for stray animals, a charity is nearing its target.
However, in a bid to fulfil the dream, Saltburn Animal Rescue Association (Sara) must find between five and eight acres of land to home unwanted animals in east Cleveland.
The charity, formed in 1995, currently look after 30 dogs and 32 cats who live with 16 foster carers throughout east Cleveland and beyond.
Strays, mainly dogs and cats, are given priority, although no animals are turned away.
The volunteers, who have raised nearly £205,000, through fundraising, public support and legacies, are calling on the public to help in their quest to find the land and buildings.
Sara chairman Ann Prosser said the need for the sanctuary was desperate.
"The more we do, the more we need the refuge. The need is constant," she said.
"Although we have yet to reach our target, we need to get a base in the east Cleveland area.
"We need the land with outbuildings and somewhere for a manager to live."
The charity, which is also inundated with pet rats, is currently looking for homes for a well cared for German shepherd and a collie who were found by their owner's side after he died suddenly.
Anyone who can help is asked to go to www.s-a-r-a. org.uk or ring the helpline on (01287) 201005 from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 1pm.
