A BUSINESSWOMAN on a mission to transform the fortunes of a derelict Victorian church building has received a boost.
Chris Moore has been granted planning permission to convert St Luke's Church in Sedgefield, County Dur-ham, into a health and fitness centre.
The church is all that remains of the large Winterton Psychiatric Hospital complex, which was demolished six years ago and is now the site of a housing estate.
The imposing church, a Grade II listed building, has remained empty ever since the closure.
Planners at Sedgefield Borough Council have given Ms Moore the go-ahead.
Councillors took the decision despite some concerns from residents over potential car parking, traffic and noise problems.
Ms Moore said work on the church would begin immediately, starting with the construction of a mezzanine floor.
She grew up in the village and has fond memories of the church, which will retain many of its original features and maintain its ecclesiastical appearance.
When complete, the centre should include a gymnasium, a spa, rest and recreation areas, treatment rooms and an upstairs studio.
Ms Moore said: "It's all systems go now and I'm just so excited by the whole thing.
"I'm delighted by the support from the councillors and it was a great joy to see they were prepared to give me this backing.
"The project will be a fitting tribute to Winterton staff and the patients treated by them because the church is to be retained as a monument to them."
Ms Moore is hoping that building work will be completed in time for a September opening.
