A FAMILY has won a shed thanks to a prize draw aimed at improving garden security in Darlington.
Amanda Jack and Keith Davison, from Red Hall, took delivery of the shed, supplied by Gardeners' Barn, with security provided by Brian's Locksmith. They plan to use it to store some of their two children's toys.
Ms Jack said: "It was a bit of a shock, because I have never won anything before, but we are really pleased. It will be very useful for the kids' toys."
Crime prevention officers PC Ian Clelland and PC Steve Rich held a display in Darlington Market Place earlier this month to highlight garden security.
Jackie Snowball, Neighbourhood Watch liason officer in the town, said the officers were highlighting steps that can be taken to use gardens as the first line of defence against burglars.
"They also highlighted the value of items quite often stored in a wooden building with very little security to keep them safe," she said.
"This is especially relevant at this time of year, when there is potentially a second- hand market for garden tools, more than at other times of the year."
She said that prickly shrubs, lightweight trellis and even an area of stone chippings that are noisy to walk on, can all deter thieves.
"It is about protecting your home and property without turning it into a fortress," she said.
As well as the garden shed prize, there were tools provided by Machine Mart, which were won in the draw by Rebecca Sunter, of Beaumont Street, Darlington.
