Durham must await the results of a scan on Nicky Peng's left shoulder before they know whether he will miss more than a handful of one-day games.

Peng dislocated the shoulder when making a diving stop against Somerset at Taunton on Sunday and is definitely out of tomorrow's floodlit totesport League match against Sussex at Hove and the opening Twenty20 Cup tie at Trent Bridge on Friday.

"The shoulder went back in OK and there's no break, but there is a concern that he might have suffered similar damage to Paul Collingwood last season," said coach Martyn Moxon.

"It's very frustrating because we just can't seem to get any continuity in the side.

"It's particularly disappointing after Nicky batted so well and we hoped it would be a springboard to a good run of form."

Either Ian Pattison or Graeme Bridge will take over tomorrow, when Moxon wants to see Durham get through their overs more quickly.

They still had one over to bowl after the stipulated cut-off time on Sunday, which should have meant they lost six runs.

But Moxon revealed: "Apparently you are allowed one over leeway in rain-interrupted games so we were in the clear.

"But it was too close for comfort and our over rate is something which concerns me in all forms of cricket. It's something we need to deal with."

Shoaib Akhtar is never quick to bowl his overs and Durham weren't helped on Sunday by him bowling a couple of wides and being no-balled for bowling two bouncers in one over.

Following his meeting with new Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, Durham now know that Shoaib will be leaving in mid August to prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy. They expect to announce a replacement shortly.

* Graeme Swann took three wickets as Northamptonshire continued to enjoy the better of proceedings on the third day of their Frizzell County Championship clash against Lancashire at Liverpool.

The home side ended the day on 214 for six in reply to Northants' first innings of 357 all out, still trailing by 143 runs.

Swann broke an opening partnership of 76 between Iain Sutcliffe and Mark Chilton when he trapped Sutcliffe lbw for 48. He then claimed the prize wicket of Stuart Law for three when he had the Aussie caught behind to continue a poor run of form.

When Dinesh Mongia (18) well taken at mid-off by Adam Shantry shortly after tea Lancashire were struggling to reach their follow-on target of 208. But useful innings by Dominic Cork (46 not out), Warren Hegg (30) and Steven Crook (20no) saw the home side pass that figure and remove the most likely chance of a result in a match severely affected by the weather.
