TWO women were taken to hospital yesterday after their car went off the A1 and hit a tree.
The red Renault Clio left the northbound carriage on the approach to Scotch Corner shortly before midday, and ended up in a vertical position against the tree.
Passing lorry drivers helped the 22-year-old driver from the car and she was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with head injuries and cuts to her hands.
The 21-year-old passenger was trapped and had to be freed by firefighters. She was airlifted to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and is believed to have head injuries.
The northbound carriageway was closed for more than three hours. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call police on (01423) 539474.
