PENSIONERS are being urged to make sure they are not missing out on council tax and housing benefits.
An advice day will be held on Tuesday at the Kirkbymoorside area office of Ryedale District Council to ensure all local pensioners can find out about the benefits available to them.
It is estimated that four out of ten pensioners in the UK are missing out on millions of pounds in unclaimed council tax benefit, with each person missing out on an average £426 reduction. Some are missing out on a full discount.
They may also be due arrears dating from last October -up to an extra five months towards last year's council tax bills.
Ryedale's assistant chief executive, Sue Redfern, said: "So many Ryedale pensioners could be missing out on these benefits. We want to do all we can to help the residents of Ryedale claim what they are entitled to and reduce their bills.
"The open day will allow local people to find out more about just what benefits are available to them. We hope to hold similar events throughout the district in the very near future."
