children in Teesside have designs on improving fire safety.

They have devised games, educational packages and working models, all with a fire prevention message.

Pupils at eight schools across Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Saltburn, Redcar and Stockton, have submitted entries in a competition organised by steel company Corus and Cleveland Fire Brigade.

The models include miniature homes and show how fast smoke travels and where to plan escape routes.

Ray Dowson, from Cleveland Fire Brigade's community safety division, said it was an ideal opportunity for youngsters to learn skills and help spread the message of fire safety to their families and the community.

Secondary schools are competing for a share of £6,000 prize money donated by Corus and other local companies.

The competition will be judged at the Corus Family Gala Day, at Redcar Rugby Club, on Sunday, when the winners will be announced and the models demonstrated.
