CARIBBEAN Coral, winner of the Vodafone Dash at Epsom recently, took another valuable sprint for trainer John Quinn at Newcastle last Friday night. Robert Winston had the ride and won in confident manner.

The Settrington trainer paid 48,000gns for the gelding at Newmarket last October and these two sprints, at some £43,500 and £17,400 respectively, have more than made his purchase price.

Quinn said: "I hadn't an owner for him at the time, but I thought he was worth taking a chance with, so I bought him. It was the most I've ever paid, but I'm glad I did."

He went on to take a double with young Daniel Tudhope partnering Icenaslice to a second win from her last three runs. Tudhope won at Newmarket for Declan Carroll in the apprentice race on Saturday and the Warthill trainer also won there Friday night, when Lisa Jones rode The Fun Merchant.

The southern-based lass, who needs only one or two more wins to lose her claim, also won at Thirsk for David Chapman on Paddywack. Chapman sent out the aptly-named Soaked at a wet Newcastle Saturday meeting and Queen Of The Night at Southwell, partnered by Tony Culhane and Darren Williams respectively.

Apprentice Tony Hamilton, who partnered a winner for Richard Fahey at Newcastle on Thursday, missed out on a double at Leicester for Fahey that evening as he was stuck in traffic. Michael Hills proved an able deputy on Willjojo. Fahey is in good form and Hamilton won for him on Fonthill Road, while another good apprentice, Paul Hanagan, partnered Sharoura at Pontefract, also winning for Mary Reveley in the seller.
