DARLINGTON eventer Lucy Bell made the journey up to Scotland worthwhile when she finished ninth at the Burgie CCI* international three-day event in Moray.
The 22-year-old rode her 15.2hh mare Miss Inca, her partner of the past 2 years, and the pair made a good start in the opening dressage phase. Their score of 47 penalties put them just ten marks behind the leader at that stage.
"Miss Inca did a lovely test and I was very pleased - we were lying equal ninth at that stage," said Lucy, who has just finished a marketing degree at Leeds University.
The pair then went on to tackle the speed and endurance phase, including Burgie's hilly cross-country course which requires a fit and bold horse. They jumped clear in style with just 2.8 time penalties.
Lucy said: "I had a lovely cross-country round - Miss Inca gave me a super ride. She pulled a bit, but took all the direct routes.
"The water complex was sticky for a few, especially as there was a lot to look at around the fence, but she kept her concentration and flew through. I thought it was quite a tough course for a one star event."
Lucy ended the event with a "foot perfect" show jumping performance.
"Our next major aim will be the Scottish Novice Championships at Thirlestane Castle in August," Lucy added.
"I'm also hoping to compete in the Derby House Owner/Rider Championships in Cheshire at the very end of August and to make the step up to a two star three-day event in the autumn."
