AN event that is fast becoming an institution kicked off nine days of varied entertainment.
Thirsk Festival, organised by the local Rotary Club, is now in its sixth year and is designed to provide something for everyone.
As well as helping to raise the town's profile, the event provides a shop window for the activities of local interest groups.
It also works to build community spirit and help local organisations in need.
There will be concerts, displays, exhibitions, talks, films, competitions, games, stalls, a funfair and a two-day carnival and funfair on Sowerby Flatts next weekend.
Among the many events running throughout the festival is a sculpture trail that has been set up at Holyrood House and Thorpe House, at Sowerby, which is open between 2pm and 5pm daily.
It has been set up by the Yorkshire Sculptors' Group, which has exhibited throughout the North since it was founded in 1985.
