PROPOSALS to halve the speed limit in a village that has become a tourist honeypot have been welcomed by teachers and parents.
Narrow, winding roads through Rosedale Abbey, near Pickering, are subject to the national speed limit of 60mph.
But the county council is considering dropping the limit to 30mph following a request from the village's parish council.
The local primary school is in the heart of the village and headteacher Nicola Johnson said parents and teachers were backing the move.
"We've got endless problems really," she said.
"It's been highlighted this week as we've been training ten children in cycling proficiency.
"We've got huge warning signs up at all entrances to the village, three teachers are wearing fluorescent yellow jackets and the children have got fluorescent bands on and helmets, but to some people it doesn't make a blind bit of difference."
She said: "Rosedale does have a speeding problem. It should be 30mph through the village.
"I'd hate it to be as a result of an accident that the speed limit is changed."
