THERE was no mistaking the enthusiasm when youngsters were asked to come up with new road safety signs to be positioned near their school.

All the pupils at Wavell infant and junior schools, Catterick Garrison, decided to enter the competition - making judging a tough task.

The contest was organised by North Yorkshire County Council's road safety officer, Alison Butterfield, and the youngsters were asked to design road signs for 20mph zones on the garrison.

Four signs were needed for the scheme and the winners from the junior school were Donna Ospray, 11; Jason Wiltshire, nine; and Rowanne Hibbit, ten. From the infant school the winner was Emma Robson, six. They were all presented with their prizes by county councillor Carl Les during special assemblies at their schools.

The prizes included a gift voucher for every winner and a pack of road safety gifts. Miniature versions of the four signs were presented to every winner, and one was also presented to the school. There was also a small prize for every child who entered.

The signs will now be displayed in Wavell Road and Wardrop Road.

Coun Les said: "We were delighted by the response from the children. When the signs are put up, they will be a permanent reminder of how seriously we take our 20mph zones."
