A NEW approach to tackling domestic violence is being taken in a part of North Yorkshire.
Two professionals have been appointed to take a more positive and pro-active way of dealing with the problem in the Scarborough and Ryedale areas.
Together, they are spearheading a greater multi-agency approach to tackling domestic violence and abuse, which now accounts for 25 per cent of all violent crime.
Sandra Moss has taken on the role of domestic violence co-ordinator for the Safer Communities Partnership, North York Moors and Coast and for Safer Ryedale.
She has been joined by PC Gill Foley, who is domestic violence co-ordinator for the eastern area of North Yorkshire Police.
Ms Moss said the approach was in line with Government policy, which now has domestic violence as a high priority issue.
"For too long domestic abuse has been a hidden crime, taking place behind closed doors and out of sight," she said.
"Now the issue of tackling all forms of domestic abuse - physical, sexual, emotional and financial - is high on the Government agenda."
