A DISABLED teenager has won a national award for his hard work and determination.
Thomas Anderson, 15, was nominated for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award, by teachers at Carmel RC Technology College, in Darlington.
School spokeswoman Jennifer Wilkes said: "Thomas has been chosen for the award because of the inspirational qualities he has demonstrated during his career at Carmel.
"Thomas has fought illness throughout his life and is a true example to staff and pupils in the college."
She said Thomas had recently been ill in hospital but insisted on sitting his GCSE exams from his hospital bed.
"Thomas has many friends within the Carmel community, both staff and pupils," said Ms Wilkes.
"He is always cheerful and has a wonderful smile. Pupils regularly send cards, video messages and gifts to Thomas when he is too ill to come into college."
Thomas will return to the school in September to begin A-level studies.
